This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Sec. of State Terri Lynn Land campaigns for Bouchard, and herself

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 07.28.10 | 3:33 pm

Many Secretaries of State around the county have taken oaths of non-partisanship and don’t endorse candidates out of concern that it could make them appear biased in their role as election administrator.

Michigan’s Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has taken a different approach.

Today as she publicly announced the estimated voter turn out for Tuesday’s primary — 1.7 million — she also circulated an editorial telling voters that Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard is the best choice for governor. Land is seeking the lt. governor position on the Bouchard ticket.

Not unlike the reforms I have made to the office of the Secretary of State, state government needs to be completely transformed. To do this, Michigan needs a strong leader who is not afraid to make the difficult decisions to fix Lansing and get Michigan back to work. This is just one of the reasons why I am proud to support Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard for Governor.

Mike’s “Blueprint for Prosperity” plan highlights the necessary steps Michigan must take to once again lead the nation in job creation and growth. As a former leader in the Michigan Senate, Mike knows what it will take for Michigan to be successful once again. When he left the legislature to become Oakland County Sheriff, Michigan was one of the nation’s top states to start or move a business and we had $1 billion dollars in our rainy day fund. Repairing eight years of neglect won’t be easy, but Mike is committed to making those difficult decisions, even if it means he is going to be a one-term governor.

I know that Michigan’s best choice to bring us back to prosperity is to elect Mike Bouchard. I joined the Bouchard team and look forward to working with him to reform state government and reverse eight years of failed leadership.

Please join me in supporting Mike Bouchard for governor on August 3rd. With your support, we will make the difficult decisions to fix Lansing and get Michigan back to work.

Among the current crop of candidates to replace Land as secretary of state only Democrat Jocelyn Benson, a law professor at Wayne State University, has taken an oath of non-partisanship.

“The perception of partisanship is a problem,“ Benson said. “How can a secretary of state be elected in a partisan capacity and also be nonpartisan when elected? I found that the best way is that the individual take a pledge.”

State Sen. Michelle McManus (R-Lake Leelanau) rejected the idea of refraining from campaigning while in office.

“My whole political career I have endorsed people from the local races to top of the ticket,” she said. “The bottom line is that I am a Republican and a conservative. I already am partisan.”
