Stupak seat named 40th most likely to flip

By Ed Brayton | 07.27.10 | 11:48 am

National Journal ranks the 40 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives that are most likely to elect a legislator from a different party than the incumbent — and ranks Michigan’s 1st Congressional District, currently held by Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, at #40 on the list.

Stupak is retiring from the seat, leaving a wide open race. State Rep. Gary McDowell is unopposed in the Democratic primary, while five Republicans battle for their party’s nomination.

The Republican candidates are: Dr. Dan Benishek of Crystal Falls, Linda Goldthorpe of Curtis, Don Hooper of Iron River, Tom Stillings of Torch Lake who calls himself “THE Tea Party Republican“, Patrick Donlon of St. Ignace and State Sen. Jason Allen of Alanson.

So far, Benishek and Allen appear to be the frontrunners for the GOP nomination.

If the Republicans take this seat it would help them in their goal of taking control of the House from the Democrats.
