Derek Wallbank, from the MinnPost.com, tells Michigan Messenger that Congressman Pete Hoekstra (R-Holland) has agreed to join the now forming ‘House Tea Party Caucus.’
Hoekstra, who is vying for the GOP nomination for governor, was hit with a negative advertisement Monday by rival Attorney General Mike Cox. That attack ad criticizes Hoekstra for missing what his spokesman has classified as “procedural votes,” on health care reform. It also criticizes Hoekstra for voting for the “Wall Street bailout,” the financial bailout of banks in 2008.
Tea Party advocates are critical of both health care reform and the bailouts of not only banks, but the auto industry.
Hoekstra, Cox and Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard have openly courted the Tea Party vote in their bids for governor.
In a piece on MinnPost.com, Wallbank reports the caucus’ purpose as thus:
“This caucus will espouse the timeless principles of our founding, principles that all Members of Congress have sworn to uphold,” Bachmann said in a statement. “The American people are doing their part and making their voices heard and this caucus will prove that there are some here in Washington willing to listen.”
In addition to Hoekstra, Cox and Bouchard, Ann Arbor businesman Rick Snyder and State Sen. Tom George (R-Texas Township) are vying for the GOP nomination for governor. On the Democratic side, House Speaker Andy Dillon (D-Redford Township) and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero are battling for their party’s nomination.
