New GOP poll shows Cox, Hoekstra on top

By Ed Brayton | 07.20.10 | 7:02 am

A new poll shows Attorney General Mike Cox and U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra in a very close battle for the Republican nomination for governor, with Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder not far behind. The survey, done for WZZM-13 TV, has Cox at 26.4 percent, Hoekstra at 25.6 percent and Snyder at 20.2 percent.

The poll had other revealing numbers in it as well. Regionally, Hoekstra has a commanding lead in West Michigan with 41.7 percent of the vote; Snyder is second in that part of the state with only 16.5 percent.Cox holds a strong lead in Macomb and Wayne counties, but Bouchard leads in his native Oakland county.

Perhaps most revealing are the favorable/unfavorable ratings of the candidates. Cox has the highest unfavorable ratings by far, with more than 25 percent saying they view him unfavorably; no other candidate is above 11 percent.
