The Escanaba Daily Press in Michigan’s upper peninsula reports that 250 people gathered for a Tea Party event Saturday.
There, speakers were treated to litany of issues seen in other Tea Party gatherings across the state — claims of socialism, demanding free markets, out of control spending, reports the Press.
“We have had legislators look the other way as jobs were outsourced, as there were abuses of our natural resources, in addition to the sacking of our economy to prevent the failure of banks deemed too large to fail,” said [Carol "CJ"] Williams [of the U.P. Patriots].
Escanaba was a stop on the April Tea Party Express tour. That group has come under increasing scrutiny, and on Sunday, the Tea Party Federation kicked the Express out. The reason? A brewing controversy over race relations and allegations the Tea Party movement is racist.
Mark Williams, the Tea Party Express’ former president and spokesman, caused the firestorm last week when he responded to the NAACP resolution calling on the Tea Party movement to condemn racism. Williams posted a blog from “colored” people to President Abraham Lincoln, in which he mocked the NAACP and the issues of race relations in America.
One of the continuing rhetorical battles surrounding the Tea Party movement is the allegation it is racist. Michigan Messenger has noted and published photographs of signs others say are racist, reported on the sale of “straight pride” t-shirts at the Tea Party Express rally at the Capitol in April, and noted that at a February gathering, anti-Jewish videos were distributed.
