Republicans for Environmental Protection endorse Snyder for governor

The Michigan chapter of Republicans for Environmental Protection has announced its support for gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder of Ann Arbor.

The Republican environmentalists said today that Snyder is “undoubtedly the only candidate in the Republican gubernatorial primary with clear, commonsense solutions to Michigan’s problems and a dedication to protecting the state’s priceless natural resources.”

“Rick Snyder stands well above the crowded field for the Republican nomination in both his desire to protect Michigan’s natural treasures and create jobs for Michiganders,” chapter president Mark Neisler said in a statement. “His policies on the environment are fully developed and informed by his experience as an entrepreneur and as a leader with The Nature Conservancy—it is easy to envision him picking up the mantle of William Milliken as Michigan’s next great conservation leader.”

Snyder said that the is extremely proud to receive the support from REP and he reiterated his belief that natural resource preservation is key to Michigan’s long term economic vitality.

“It is not enough for our leadership to only respond to crises as they arise, we must proactively plan ahead in mitigating risks,” he said in a statement. “Knee jerk reactions frequently offer too little too late, placing economic costs on an already burdened Michigan economy.”

On the campaign trail Snyder has warned that Michigan is lagging in environmental stewardship and that the ongoing state budget crisis has destabilized funding for critical resource protection programs.

Snyder’s plan for protecting Michigan’s environment includes increased use of public-private partnerships.

He states:

State government needs to build partnerships with local governments, private businesses, non-profits, and citizens to preserve and protect our environment. Michigan’s research universities and talented professionals need to be leveraged as part of a comprehensive plan to safeguard our communities when unforeseen environmental hazards occur. Public and private partnerships should not only help with funding but also monitor the environment, identify potential threats before they occur, and swiftly deal with incidents that do occur.
