Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser has declared his party the “overwhelming favorites” to win the governor’s seat in this fall’s election.
The Detroit Free Press reports Weiser made the comments to a conference call.
“People are going to want a change. We saw that in 2008, and Obama took advantage of it,” Weiser told reporters in a conference call. “And certainly as Republicans we’re going to take advantage of the same thing.”
He added: “I know there’s always the possibility that something strange can happen, but we certainly are overwhelming favorites now to take the governorship.”
Weiser says his certainty in the issue comes from the poor state of the economy and polling results showing both Democrats Gov. Jennifer Granholm and President Barack Obama have low approval ratings.
But Mark Brewer, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party is promising a fight for the governor’s office.
“I’ll guarantee a competitive race in which every blemish of the Republican candidate is exposed,” Brewer said. “They’ve all got baggage. We’ll expand on that in the fall.”
Translation: get ready for a nasty fall election cycle, folks.
On Aug. 3 Michigan Republicans and Democrats will go to the polls to select their nominee for governor. On the Republican ticket are Mike Bouchard, Mike Cox, Rick Snyder, Pete Hoekstra and Tom George. On the Democratic ticket are Andy Dillon and Virg Bernero.
