Former Congressman Joe Schwarz is still making waves in his former district, Michigan’s 7th.
The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports that on Monday, Schwarz announced he was endorsing Republican newcomer Brian Rooney in the GOP primary.
“I think he’s the best choice because he served in the military, has a very good legal background and he has a broad view of what the problems are, and what the solutions are with the economy,” Schwarz said.
Rooney is facing Tim Walberg and Marvin Carlson in the Aug. 3 primary. The bad blood between Walberg and Schwarz goes back four years, when Walberg ousted Schwarz in the GOP primary. That happened because the Club for Growth political action committee spent a ton of money to paint Schwarz as liberal. Walberg went on to win the seat and served one term before being ousted by Democrat Mark Schauer in 2008.
Schauer was endorsed by Schwarz in 2008.
Walberg is not taking the endorsement of Rooney lightly, reports the Citizen Patriot.
“‘Granted, Brian Rooney moved into the 7th District from Wayne County the same day he signed his candidacy papers, but he should know better than to let Congressman and Mark Schauer endorse[r] Joe Schwarz raise money for his campaign. Congressman Joe Schwarz has said he will support Congressman Mark Schauer in the general election if Tim Walberg is the Republican nominee, so Brian Rooney should disavow Joe Schwarz’ support and cancel the fundraiser,’ said campaign spokesman Joe Wicks.”
This GOP primary in this district has already been quite contentious, with anti-choice advocates chastising Rooney for skipping the Jackson Right to Life dinner. And Walberg is now up on the air with a commercial in which he calls on America to return to “the traditional values that made America great.”
