Wheeler Smith endorses former gubernatorial opponent Bernero

By Todd A. Heywood | 07.12.10 | 11:42 am

Alma Wheeler Smith, the state House representative from Salem Township and former Democratic contender for governor, has announced she is endorsing Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero in the Democratic primary.

Smith will make the formal announcement at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Ypsilanti. An undisclosed number of Washtenaw county Democrats will also endorse Bernero at the event.

Bernero has been racking up major endorsements in the last couple of weeks, including Planned Parenthood, National Organization for Women and labor powerhouses the MEA and AFL-CIO. He also picked up the key endorsements of several Detroit area Congressional delegates over the weekend.

Smith dropped from the race earlier this year when she was unable to gather the 30,000 signatures necessary to qualify for the ballot. She has been a state representative, state senator and was former Congressman John Bonior’s choice for Lt. Governor in the 2002 primary.

Could this be a step toward Smith joining the Bernero ticket as Lt. Gov.?
