The Michigan departments of Agriculture and Community Health are warning those who operate eateries in the state of a scam.
According to a joint press release from the two departments, an unidentified person is calling up eateries masquerading as Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) official. The caller then tells the staff the eatery is due for its inspection and it is time to schedule it. At the time of the scheduling the caller asks for “personal information.” Those who refuse to schedule the appointment or provide the private information are threatened with enforcement action, the state claims.
“Food safety is paramount to MDA in all aspects of the food chain, including restaurants, and it’s completely unacceptable for anyone to mock our food safety programs by posing as a phony inspector,” said Don Koivisto, MDA Director. “Inspections are unannounced to ensure proper food safety measures are being followed at all times and it’s rare that a state or local inspector would schedule an inspection. Additionally, food establishment owners and managers should never provide confidential information such as a social security number over the phone.”
The state then recommends business owners to demand proper credentials, and bar those without them from access.
