Hoekstra ‘on the job for Michigan’ — but skips unemployment extension vote

By Ed Brayton | 07.02.10 | 7:55 am

ThinkProgress points out that Rep. Pete Hoekstra, running to be governor of a state with a 13.6 percent unemployment rate, missed the last two votes in the House on the unemployment benefits extension bill because he’s attending fundraisers.

Last night, while the House was voting to pass the bill, Hoekstra was at a country club for a $250 a plate dinner and VIP reception. And the grand irony: The website for the fundraiser uses the slogan “On the job for Michigan.”

His fellow Republicans in the state delegation all showed up for the vote and they were split. Reps. Dave Camp and Candice Miller voted against the bill; Reps. Fred Upton, Vern Ehlers, Thad McCotter and Mike Rogers voted for the bill. All of the Michigan Democrats voted for the bill.

Camp and Miller may have some difficulty explaining to the unemployed residents of their districts why they don’t think they deserve to eat or pay their bills. Hoekstra, on the other hand, may have to explain why he didn’t even think it was worth showing up to be “on the job for Michigan” and cast a vote to help the struggling workers in the state he wants to lead for the next four years.

Here’s the invitation to Hoekstra’s fundraiser:
