Unemployment extension update: Where are we now?

By Ed Brayton | 06.29.10 | 11:20 am

The battle continues behind the scenes in Congress as the Democratic leadership tries to pass another extension of unemployment benefits, with or without various other provisions in a larger package of tax reforms and boosts to funding for states facing economic and fiscal disaster.

One day after declaring that the unemployment extension should and would remain as part of the larger jobs bill (aka the extenders bill), Sen. Debbie Stabenow shifted strategies and introduced a new bill for that one issue on its own. But will that bill get to the floor for a vote? Maybe not, according to a report at Open Congress, summed up well here.

Senator Debbie Stabenow’s (D-Michigan) standalone unemployment extension bill has already been introduced. It will now be up to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) as to whether Stabenow’s unemployment extension bill is brought to the floor of the Senate for debate or a “unanimous consent” vote and when.

Senator Reid has previously expressed that he prefers to keep the unemployment benefits extension provisions of the bill included in the broader “American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010″ or “Extenders” bill and intends to set it aside and move onto other business for the next few weeks in order to pressure Republicans to vote for the entire package of provisions when he returns to it.

So, while Senator Stabenow’s standalone unemployment extension bill could be entertained by the Senate soon, it will be up to Reid whether he chooses to bring it up for consideration and when he wants to do so.

The real question is whether either of those bills can be passed without complying with pay-as-you-go rules and being offset by cuts elsewhere or revenue increases, as the Republicans are demanding. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested last week that the Democrats may have to give in on that issue and take the money from another program or identify cuts or tax increases to pay for it, but so far no language has been introduced to do so.

Failure to pass the bill will not only harm those who face the loss of their unemployment benefits — 1.2 million Americans will do so on Thursday — but may increase the numbers of the unemployed as well. As The Hill notes, unemployment benefits provide nearly $7 billion a month in spending. Every dollar given in unemployment compensation is worth $1.90 in economic stimulus, according to the CBO.

I just watched a little of c-span2 and watched 2 senators fight like children, neither side is for the American People. Dems give the flood insurance quick playing politics, there are more important issues like the 1.2 million or more unemployed who will be evicted from their homes and hungry while you both go on your vacations. Shame on the dem and repubs. This has brought me to tears infront of my grnadchildren who you say will suffer, heck they already are when both of their parents are layed off as the rest of their family is. Again shame on both sides. Not a one of you is worthy of a vote.

I agree. Those grandstanding blowhearts are all about saving their jobs and having food on their tables. They will break for two weeks, enjoy 4th of July feasts with their families while we worry about being homeless. SHAME ON THEM!

    • TravisNC

I saw that also. I was blaming the republicans but now I see it for what it really is. Democrats are no better! All they want to do is further their agenda at the expense of distressed Americans. What a July 4th this will be! Shame on them

I agree, all the do is bicker, fighting about who is right and who is wrong. They do not care about us but themselves. They are so patheric when election time comes, begging people for their votes. I hope the guilty party for not passing the bill voters see what they are doing to them. They said Republicans support the rich, the rich are getting poor, the rich who were rich at some point and now unemployed need your support. Bunch of arrogants!

My first question is how well is your math skills? I see that it was stated 431,000 jobs have been created out of those 411,000 were temporary census positions!!! There are 15.0 million people unemployed and 6.8 million have been unemployed for more than 27 weeks, where are they to work? There are not enough jobs out there! People are starving and living on the streets now because you and your fellow constituents are finally worried about deficit spending, why can we not help the fellow American but we send aid all over the world and we can't take care of our own.

We are in a crisis situation here there are approximately 643,000 Americans homeless currently with up 1.5 using an emergency shelter or transitional housing, and with the denial of the unemployment bill there could be an additional 15 million in the same tragic circumstance in the very near future. Do you care or worry about the children of these 15 million people? With that being said the actual number of future starving and homeless will have at least doubled and possibly tripled once we add the children in the equation.

There are not enough shelters in our country to house these individuals or food pantries to feed them. Are you and your fellow constituents alright in knowing this do you all have no souls? Also, just wait and see life in American as we once knew has changed and once all the long term unemployed lose their benefits you all will see the scary aftermath that has become our country.

I guarantee crime will at least triple as well as violent crimes and murders, people will not care they will do what is in their instincts to survive may it be rob, kill, or steal no one will be safe anymore. People will have a no care attitude their thinking will be way out the box they will have the mentality that if they commit a crime and go to jail they will have shelter and three meals a day something they can not get currently.

Then what will happen when the jails and prisons run over and can no longer house additional inmates, I will tell you what will happen pure and utter chaos in every state, city, and town in America. There are only 13,492 FBI special agents, 800,000 law enforcement officers; there are approximately 1,421,668 in all of the armed forces. How are they going to keep us safe when 15 million are fighting to eat and have shelter? There are approximately 22 million people in Iraq not too far off from the amount of people we will have here with no means to support themselves!!

Also, may I ask where is the 7 billion a month come from to keep our troops in Iraq, also where is the 9 billion dollars that is unaccounted for in Iraq, or the 10 billion that has been mismanaged or wasted there, or where does the $390,000 a year come from to deploy just one solider in Iraq? Or how can our country afford to give Haiti a 100 million or more, or 779 million to Sudan, or 684 million to Egypt, or 327 million to Uganda, or 592 million to Ethiopia and the list goes on yet we can not help on own? Also employers across the U.S. pay into unemployment where are these countries paying into us, yet we freely hand them our tax dollars?

I want answers to these questions but I am sure you can not give one can you? Also, how many of the 15 million of the unemployed will be in line to receive public aid, food stamps, or shelter/public housing? And how are those programs funded with tax dollars? At least some of the monies are recuperated from employers for unemployment benefits something that can not be said for the monies spent on war or given to other countries.

I am so passionate about this because yes I am 1 of the 15 million and I have experience I hold a degree in accounting and I am still seeking employment and have been since February 2009. I have submitted at the minimum of 75 resumes a week and not just in my own city but across the U.S praying to get something I have had 5 interviews and at all 5 I have been told I am 1 in 10-20 they picked to interview and at least 200 people have applied for that 1 position. Do you not see this as a crisis situation?

I am praying that this country that we all fought and worked for so much is not about to crumble before all of our eyes. I do believe very soon we will all be shocked and devastated when we see how our country has fallen to a level of despair we may never come back from. Although, we hear nightly on the news the recession is over and things are getting better well lets see what happens when the unemployment dollars are no longer circulating in the economy and more houses go foreclosed, more car repo’s, credit cards and bank loans unpaid. Then everyone will see it’s not a recession we are in it’s a depression and I do believe it will be worse than the Great Depression because if we crumble most of the world will follow.

Last but not least for every dollar spent on employment 1.63 dollars is infused back into the economy, does that happen with food stamps, monies given to war, or to other countries, I do not believe so. We all will see what happens when those dollars are no longer being circulated back into the economy mark my final word the stock market and the world will crash soon!! Thanks to all the senator's out there that finally worry about deficit spending after shelling countless of billions to other countries, war, and big businesses (i.e.: banks, car makers, and such) but no we can not help the people!!!!!!

I am a single parent of 2 teenagers. I am unable to pay my July rent, have about 6 days worth of food in my kitchen, no gas in my car and I have to find a way to pick my daughter up from her fathers house on Monday. He lives an hour away and with out gas, I don't know how I am going to get there. I understand that they don't want to add to the deficit, but I don't understand not taking care of American Citizens!!! The senators NEED to find a way to pass this bill NOW!!! I have emailed each and every senator 2 times, email the White House, and all of my local news stations. What else can we do?!?!?!?! I have signed the petition at change.org. We need to find a way to make ourselves be heard since what we have been doing thus far is not helping…..Any suggestions?!?!?!

Reid is a political machine and needs to be ousted! Reid said he was going to make sure this was passed before the Memorial Day recess and, instead, he relaxed and enjoyed celebrating the holiday while unemployed veterans and other unemployed citizens worried about our UI benefits. And now, he's still refusing to bring this to a vote. Reid will probably enjoy his 4th of July vacation too, while millions of us can't pay the rent. This is an outrage!!! Reid doesn't care about the unemployed, or else he'd bring a standalone bill to a vote. He's a hypocrite and a liar.

That Harry reid is the culprit. He has something stuck up his ass. I don't blame Republicans alone in this. Both sides are to blame. Nearly 44 % of the Senators are millionaires, when less than 1% of US population are. The rest get paid handsomely with tax payers money. You think they care about you? Then you are mistaken. It's not the fat cats in Wall Street that created this problem, they are the fat cats in Washington that did. So they must be charged and brought to justice if you ask me. Lobbying, campaign donations so on and so forth- just another name for bribery which is a crime any way you look at it. They are the ones making our lives miserable. I suggest even bringing those firing squad from Utah and line them up in Capital Hill and take care of them. No one misses them. Who cares about their familie as they don't seem to care about ours.

People we are on our own, the Goverment does not care, because they can't figure out how to make a profit for themselves, all we have is our right to bear arms, and maybe a march on Washington will bring them to their senses, anyway since most of us will be homeless soon, WASHINGTON MALL, is as good a place to live in REPUBLICANVILLES, similar to HOOVERVILLES, from the great depression, as any place. Don't forget to VOTE this fall, and show your support for those who care about something other than special interest, corporate america, and their offshore bank accounts. SEE YOU ALL ON THE MALL

PLEEEEEEASE, Anyone out there….if you live in Nevada, please bombard this idiot Reid with calls and e-mails to take care of this as a stand-alone emergency bill. He is stratigizing his campaign at the expense of us defenseless, broke and hungry unemployed. He only wants this to be part of a larger bill so that when it fails again he can blame the Reps.. HE ACTUALLY thinks that it is going to get him re-elected. What an arrogant idiot this man is. They don't come any more vile. Libby Fowler

Can someone explain to me what this will mean for the unemployed if the stand alone is voted in. What is the difference in extending what we had and this?

WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES ELECTED YOU PEOPLE TO SERVE THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE . WELL WE NEED FOR YOU TO HELP US IN OUR TIME OF NEED BECAUSE YOU PEOPLE IN CONGRESS ARE THE ONES THAT CREATED THIS PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. I HAVE A BS DEGREE AND STILL NO ONE WANTS TO HIRE ME. I HAVE NEVER ASKED ANYONE FOR A DIME IN MY TOTAL OF 37.5 YEARS OF WORKING. IF CONGRESS CAN NOT HELP THE AMERICAM PEOLE MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE A PROTEST AT THE CAPITAL BUILDING OF 2 MILLION PEOPLE, AND THEN MAYBE THEY WILL LISTEN AND COME ELECTION TIME LETS ALL VOTE THE NO VOTES OUT OF OFFICE AND MAKE IT THAT THEY WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY BENFEITS EITHER, WE PUT THEM THERE AND LET ALL OF US REMOVE THEM AS WELL. REMEMBER THEY ARE TO HELP THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, AND THEY HAVE FAILED US…..

I have worked all my life. I am 47 now. I was laid off November of 2008. These have been the toughest time in my life. I have lost my house, my job and I guess next my dignity, I am not use on depending on anyone or anything to put a roof over my families head but I did depend on my unemployment insurance to carry through these tough economic times til I could find work. I have paid into the system for over 30 years and have never asked for assistance. I knew from the start that this would not last forever but I also relied on what had been told to me about the additional tiers. I was on my second tier which ends tomorrow. Now I find out that there will be no more benefits available after this week. I like most have relentlessly looked for employment and would take anything offered to me but there is nothing. I can only wonder what all these people will do now that theirs is running out. I do know that most will then become dependent on their states to help causing even more of burden those already in financial strife. I know other will turn to crime or other immoral acts to support their families. I also know others will be so overwhelmed that they will take their own life as in the Great depression. I sit here now wondering which I will do. This is a sad day in American history and one we will all be judged on. I hope I can make the right decision but I really can't say for I am desperate.
This is no game this is for real! I have voted Replubican all my life but now that I need help from my government I get shafted by the same party I voted for…Shame on me! God Bless everyone even the ones that are so cruel on this blog for one day we will all answer for our words and actions.

After watching the chess game in the senate, it dawned on me that both sides might be intentionaly stopping the unemployment extension. I've watched government give $700 billion to bail out wall street and the very banks that are taking our properties. $30 billion of this money was paid as bonuses. All the while the puplic had to sit here and watch the missappropriation of our tax dollars. The government has sent billions of dollars out of this country while people suffer here in the land of the free. Now the republicans get religion about not raising the nation debt and the democrats don't want to use stimulus money to head off the devistating events that will affect millions of faimilies. Neither side seems to care or worry about our fate. Did they plan this stale mate, why the inaction? These senators, acting like they are gods, will destroy the future of millions of American faimilies. The frustration is mounting in america. I served in the USMC, and have always been proud to be an american up to now. I am embarrased and disapointed in my this country. I am at a loss for words to describe the hate that is building in me for these inconsiderate, heartless, cowards that we call senators.

I desperately need help. I am a single mom of 2 boys and 2 grandchildren that I am trying to care for. I have worked all my left since I graduated from high school in 1981 I have held a job, now since economy is going through recessions I lost my job of 8 years of service. I just learned that I have cancer and I am not even able to afford my prescriptions, my car was repoed because I was not able to pay the car note, my landlord has issued me an eviction notice and Social Security has denied my application. Unemployment was all I had to help me at least keep food in my refrigerator. The rich are living good with no worries, congress is living good with not worries, the President is living good with no worries but what about us middle class people who have worked all our lives and now someone else dictates my income. I and many other people NEED and DESERVE our employment money and as many extensions that it will take since it is not our fault the previous President has messed up this economy. I'm an christian woman and I believe GOD is going to work it out in our favor. Mom in desperate need!

Come on, guys! It’s not the time to give up, nor is it the time to ask them for what we deserve! We’ve paid for these benefits in taxes so let’s act like we actually live in a DEMOCRACY and get done what needs to be done. In the 1930s the unemployed organized into a great political force and we can do it again! It’s time to stop crying on the internet, stand up for ourselves and get organized! If you haven't noticed this country has always been like this, it just happens to be affecting you now. This is a century old fight!
