Clarke gets encouraging poll results in challenge to Cheeks-Kilpatrick

State Sen. Hansen Clarke (D-Detroit) was plastering Facebook with links to a Sunday article in the Detroit Free Press. The reason? The article noted a very unscientific poll with a tiny sampling indicated Clarke was besting longtime Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick 27 percent to 19 percent.

Kilpatrick is, of course, the mother of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. The former mayor fell from grace in a spectacular text messaging and sex scandal, was convicted of lying under oath, spent time in jail, put on probation, failed to make restitution payments and is now in prison.

Clarke entered the race earlier this year after first announcing he would seek the governor’s office when Lt. Gov. John Cherry dropped out. But after further consideration, Clarke said he decided to run against Cheeks-Kilpatrick because the money was available to finance such a challenge.
