Embattled Dean aide resigns over film fracas

By Todd A. Heywood | 06.18.10 | 9:59 am

The chief of staff for State Rep. Robert Dean (D-Grand Rapids) has resigned over remarks he made to a business gathering in Chicago over a year ago.

Noah Seifullah, Dean’s staffer at the heart of the latest chapter of the Hangar42 film studio scandal, offered his resignation Thursday morning, and Dean accepted it.

Dean held a press conference in Grand Rapids on Thursday, and released the following statement on the situation:

“My top priority has always been serving the people of Grand Rapids and Michigan and I want to make sure nothing interferes with my ability to do so. My commitment to the people has never wavered and nothing has changed. I intend on sorting through the details and looking deeper in to the facts surrounding this issue. We are at a critical point in completing the state budget and I am working on the issues of my constituents. As I continue to serve the people of Grand Rapids and of Michigan; I must to do so without distraction. Unfortunately, even the perception of possible wrongdoing or unethical actions by my staff casts a shadow of uncertainty on my office and has created a distraction to my duties as a lawmaker. That is unacceptable. Therefore, this morning Mr. Seifullah offered his resignation from my office, and I accepted. It is my hope that this action will allow me and my staff to continue focusing on serving our residents, fighting for our families and turning Michigan around.”

Seifullah became embroiled in controversy earlier this week when audio of his speech was found and released by the Grand Rapids Press. In the speech, he brags about making $12.5 on a $4 million investment using the Michigan Film credit. But developers of Hangar42 say Seifullah is not an investor or involved in the project.

Can't we as Republicans and Democrats agree that if we had a more sensible tax policy, we wouldn't need programs like the film credits and other incentive programs that just open the door to all kinds of shady dealing? The governor has recently sided with Business Leaders for Michigan to reduce the MBT and expand the sales tax to cover some services (while reduciing it to 5.5%), if she can put some political muscle behind cutting the costs of public sector employees, we might see some real reform this year. Have a look at the proposal @ http://www.michiganturnaroundplan.com.
