Former chair of Marquette County Republicans pleads no contest to criminal charges

Joel Westrom, the former chair of the Marquette County Republicans, has plead no contest in a criminal case stemming from a failed condo development in the upper peninsula city of Marquette.

A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but it is treated as a guilty plea for sentencing considerations by the court.

In exchange for the no contest plea to a misdemeanor charge of false pretenses, four felony charges were dismissed, reports the Marquette Mining Journal. He now faces a June 24 sentencing hearing. As part of the deal, prosecutors are expected to recommend probation and no jail. If a jail sentence is handed down by the judge, prosecutors will seek a deferred sentence.

The case stems from the failed Hawks Ridge Condominiums in Marquette. Westrom was the property manager of the development.

He is the second Republican tied to the development to plead guilty to charges stemming from the management and operations of the development. In February, Michael Scott Gokey, a former top aide to former Gov. John Engler, plead guilty to the crime of fraudulent use of a building contractor fund.
