VIDEO: McCain, Palin, and Jesus?

By Minehaha Forman | 09.05.08 | 11:20 pm

Prayer and God references are nothing new to political speeches and events. But at Sen. John McCain’s campaign rally in Sterling Heights, Mich., on Friday evening, the Republicans took it a step further. There were multiple references to Christianity, to prayer in school, not to mention a group of about 20 nuns in habits.

Then two men dressed in some sort of military fatigues got on stage to lead the audience in the pledge of allegiance saying, “Please prepare yourself as your religion dictates.” Meaning, or course, christianity. There were also references to “good” soldiers as “Christian soldiers.”

But perhaps the kicker was when Bishop Keith Butler, founder of Word of Faith Church, introduced McCain and Palin with a prayer that ended, “In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

That sentence alone excludes millions of Americans. One of the traveling journalists who was not from Michigan said to his colleague, “This is God country. I believe in God, but this is a little over the top.”

Is it? See for yourself.
