This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Reid files for cloture on unemployment extension, jobs bill

By Ed Brayton | 06.15.10 | 7:26 am

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed for cloture on Monday on a $115 billion bill that includes an unemployment benefit filing extension through November, an extension of heightened federal aid to states for Medicaid funding, and several other provisions. MLive.com reports that the Senate leaders hope to have the bill finished by the end of this week.

The bill would then have to be re-approved by the House. The Republicans are offering alternative legislation that would extend those provisions for only 30 days and pay for them through unspent stimulus funds. Reid says that is too short-term:

Reid also said that McConnell’s proposal did not provide a meaningful extension to the provisions.

“A 30-day extension doesn’t solve the problems we have,” he said, adding, “We have to have a legitimate program to extend these benefits into the future. Thirty days doesn’t do it. It just kicks the ball down the road.”

Of course, the Democrats’ bill also kicks the ball down the road, it just kicks it a few months further down the road. Ultimately, the problems with the Medicare doc-fix, state Medicaid funding, COBRA insurance and unemployment compensation require long-term, structural solutions.

I worked for 18 years and was laid off November 2009. Since then, I have attended 75 job fairs, 224 interviews (made at least 3 call backs to each), applied at walmart, mcdonalds, burgerking, you name I applied there. My mortgage is 2550.00, utilities are 750.00, and my insurance for my family is 839.36. The fast food place im working at only gives 1700.00 per month. I am 4 months behind on my mortgage, and my water is schedule to be shutoff next week. I applied for unemployment only to be told that I cant, because there is none left. What am I supposed to do? At this rate my family and I will be living in a shelter by august. At least if I had unemployment I could have more time to job hunt and even travel to a couple states. Working fast food for 40+ hours per week allows no time to do anything. What am I supposed to do? I am getting sued by the university I attended that honored me with my masters degree. This year gets better and better.

I have worked for 30yrs and this all i get back for paying my taxes on time no money to live on and just dont understand why we even have to go that road dont they remember that we have paid our share since day one into the treasury and now that we dont have no other income but count on the security blanket now, and we cant even get our own money that has been pre taxed. Do u call this justice? May be we should all unemployed people move in with them and let them support us 'cuz we have supported them enough to keep their JOBS!! WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE

A lot of people are depending on these clowns to get something passed in regard to unemployment insurance, including me. It's not like I've been sitting on my behind without putting any effort into looking for work…it's tough to get yourself noticed by an employer when they have several hundred other applicants competing for the same job position.

Remember these fools (both Dem and GOP) this Nov. These “rectum voids” can give 100′s of billions to the rich, but squabble over helping those who vote. No we the unemployed will not “eat cake”!

Anyone that vote for any incumbent, is part of the problem!!

I too have been out of work since last October. Try finding a job when your 60! I have sent out so many resumes I've lost track. I'm not asking for a handout just a little help. The last two interviews I had was competeing against one hundred other applicants half my age.

I have a feeling someone is going to do something so drastic that these fools wished they have listened to the American people. There is only so much one can take. I just hope the right people get it and not some innocent soul.
