U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid filed for cloture on Monday on a $115 billion bill that includes an unemployment benefit filing extension through November, an extension of heightened federal aid to states for Medicaid funding, and several other provisions. MLive.com reports that the Senate leaders hope to have the bill finished by the end of this week.
The bill would then have to be re-approved by the House. The Republicans are offering alternative legislation that would extend those provisions for only 30 days and pay for them through unspent stimulus funds. Reid says that is too short-term:
Reid also said that McConnell’s proposal did not provide a meaningful extension to the provisions.
“A 30-day extension doesn’t solve the problems we have,” he said, adding, “We have to have a legitimate program to extend these benefits into the future. Thirty days doesn’t do it. It just kicks the ball down the road.”
Of course, the Democrats’ bill also kicks the ball down the road, it just kicks it a few months further down the road. Ultimately, the problems with the Medicare doc-fix, state Medicaid funding, COBRA insurance and unemployment compensation require long-term, structural solutions.
