HUD to require compliance with local housing laws

By Ed Brayton | 06.10.10 | 7:59 am

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced this week that it will henceforth require all contractors doing business with HUD to comply not only with federal anti-discrimination law, but with all state and local discrimination laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation as well wherever they operate.

In a press release, HUD said:

For the first time in its history, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will require grant applicants seeking HUD funding to comply with state and local anti-discrimination laws that protect lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals. Today, HUD published a notice detailing the general requirements that will apply to all of the Department’s competitively awarded grant programs for Fiscal Year 2010.

“We’re using every avenue to shut the door against discrimination,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. “Today, we take an important step to insist that those who seek federal funding must demonstrate that they are meeting local and state civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Alicia Skillman, Executive Director of Equality Michigan, praised this development in an email to the Michigan Messenger. “Equality Michigan is thankful to see the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development take this step to enlarge equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community,” Skillman said. “While the state of Michigan lacks discrimination protection in housing for the LGBT community, HUD will require grant applicants seeking HUD funding to comply with state and local anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBT individuals.”
