Smoking ban leads to butts on the streets

In another report about consequences of the state’s new smoking ban, officials in Port Huron have weighed in with two new issues. Litter, and people taking drinks outside illegally.

The Port Huron Times reports the St. Clair County Health Department has received “a few” complaints about cigarette butts littering the sidewalks by various businesses.

Sue Amato, spokeswoman for the St. Clair County Health Department said the litter “does seem to be an area of concern.”

Amato said bars and restaurants should invest in containers to collect the butts. Ideally, she said, they should be placed away from entrances, but said there are no rules.

“If people can use those, that would be a good idea,” she said. “A lot of people don’t even have (the ashtrays). They just throw their butts on the floor.”

Port Huron city officials tell the Times they sweep the city streets, but sidewalks are the responsibility of the business.

In addition to the litter, Port Huron Police Capt. Jim Jones says there is a “minor” problem with people taking their drinks outside to puff away. State liquor laws prohibit alcohol from being taken outside bars and other licensed operations. Owners can face fines and revocation of their liquor license if found to have violated the law.
