Riddle, Waters plead guilty

By Ed Brayton | 05.21.10 | 7:28 am

Detroit political consultant Sam Riddle and his former girlfriend and former state Rep. Mary Waters both reached plea deals to end their federal bribery and corruption trials on Thursday. Riddle admitted to more serious charges than Waters, the Detroit News reports:

Under a deal with prosecutors, Riddle’s sentence will be capped at 37 months — the same amount of time his one-time boss, former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers, was sentenced to in her bribery case.

Former state Rep. Mary Waters pleaded guilty to a one-year misdemeanor charge of filing a false tax return and is to receive no prison time under the terms of her deal.

Riddle’s plea was to a single count of conspiracy to commit bribery, extortion and tax evasion. Waters says she still intends to run for a seat in the state Senate in November.
