The Delta County Commission, in Michigan’s upper peninsula, voted unanimously to urge the state legislature to include home-based child care centers in legislation to expand the definition of so-called school safety zones. The zones are created by state law and prevent convicted sex offenders from being 1,000 feet from schools. Lawmakers have been considering legislation which expand the definition of places requiring the 1,000 foot zones to included licensed day cares.
But Delta County officials say the current draft legislation would not recognize home-based day care centers.
One daycare provider testified before the Commission, reports the Escanaba Daily Press, that she has to limit the activities of children in her home-based facility due to the proximity of a convicted sex offender.
“One state licensed facility took down their sign, so this individual would not know it was a daycare facility,” said [Janice] Roberts. She added the individual in question had been convicted of preying on daycare age children.
The Commission will forward its resolution of support for Senate Bill 604 on to the state legislature.
