Priscila Martinez, campaign manager for One Michigan, has confirmed that the undocumented youth protesting at Arizona Sen. John McCain’s Tuscon office have been arrested.

Flavia De La Fuente, national spokesperson for the students tells Michigan Messenger the protesters were arrested by Tuscon Police.

“We don’t know how the police are going to react,” De La Fuente said, noting the city is neither a sanctuary city nor is it a city Department of Homeland Security requires law enforcement to ask about citizenship status. “They may be released after they are booked or they may not be booked at all. We don’t know.”

De La Fuente says the protesters could face trespassing charges. They were protesting for the passage of the DREAM Act, which would allow youth who came here illegally a path to citizenship.

The protest is being lead by Mohammed Abdollahi of Ann Arbor. Abdollahi came to America 21 years ago and because of an immigration paperwork foul up, has been in the country illegally for many years. Abdollahi, who is gay, is originally from Iran and could face deportation to that country. Iran is known for punishing homosexuality with torture, beatings and executions.
