Republican Congressman calls Obama “uppity”

By Ed Brayton | 09.05.08 | 7:32 am

No, seriously. This is not an SNL parody, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) actually used the word “uppity” to describe Barack and Michelle Obama:

Georgia Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland used the racially-tinged term “uppity” to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday.

Westmoreland was discussing vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s speech with reporters outside the House chamber and was asked to compare her with Michelle Obama.

“Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they’re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said.

Asked to clarify that he used the word “uppity,” Westmoreland said, “Uppity, yeah.”

When asked to comment on this John McCain replied, “You know, when I was being tortured as a POW in a Vietcong prison camp for 5 years, we didn’t have any uppity blacks.” Rudy Giuliani quickly added “9/11″ while McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin remarked, “I can’t believe you would attack Rep. Westmoreland like that. He’s married to a woman and to attack him is sexist!”
