I am writing today to announce the closure of the Michigan Messenger. After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Right-to-Life members chastise Congressional candidate Rooney

By Todd A. Heywood | 05.14.10 | 3:25 pm

Members of the Jackson Right-to-Life Committee have sent a letter to Republican Congressional candidate Brian Rooney chastising him for failing to attend their annual dinner in April.

Right To Life immediate past President Kathy Potts, Michael Buratovich, Beth Thorrez and Tom Green signed the letter sent to Rooney and the media, the Jackson Citizen Patriot reports. That letter takes Rooney to task for attending a fundraiser for the Republican Main Street Partnership, which the letter identifies as “the liberal Michigan Main Street Partnership.” The members who signed the letter say the group has a history not supporting so-called “pro-life” candidates.

From the Cit Pat report:

The letter to Rooney said former Republican Congressman Tim Walberg attended the dinner and “stands with us and never waivers.”

“We now know where you stand,” the letter said.

Rooney’s campaign manager, Mike Marzano, fired back at the RTL leaders.

“Brian’s commitment to the pro-life movement is well known,” Marzano said. “As a constitutional attorney, he fought for pro-life causes at the Thomas More Law Center.”

Rooney is fighting for the Republican nomination for the 7th Congressional District with former Congressman Tim Walberg and Marvin Carlson, a real estate executive. Race watchers say the battle is between Walberg and Rooney. Walberg is attempting to regain a seat he lost to Democrat Mark Schauer in 2008. Rooney has been a visible presence at Tea Party and tax protest events in Lansing in the past month as well.

Potts stepped down from her post as president of the local Right to Life in order to become more active in local politics, the Cit Pat reports. She is a supporter of Walberg’s, and while not officially with the campaign says she supports him again this year.

If Rooney was an attorney with the Thomas More Law Center, it's almost inconceivable that he's not strongly anti-abortion.

I posted this over at Mlive. I think it fits this article as well.

Wow… I was at the Hillsdale Right to LIfe Dinner and Tim Walberg was both campaigning, and left early. While Brian Rooney did the right thing and did not campaign, nor did he leave early. That's a shame.

Why is Tim Walberg using Right to Life Dinners as a means of campaigning? Further, why did Tim Walberg leave before the dinner and program even started at the Hillsdale Right to Life dinner? I would take that as not even coming.

I guess Tim Walberg and Ms. Potts feel that it is right to call out someone. However, they should be rightfully called out for the lack of attending the Hillsdale Right to Life Dinner for it's full duration, and for campaigning at such event. At least Brian Rooney knows when and where to campaign.

Ethics and Integrity is needed in our next Congressman. Obviously, Walberg, through Ms. Potts, is showing he has neither.

Brian Rooney's record is clear. He is strongly pro-life and he's shown that in many different ways – in his personal life with his special needs son and in his professional life by working at the pro-life Thomas More Law Center. This underhanded attack on his pro-life credentials must have been arranged by Tim Walberg. I expect nothing less. I have said before and I say now.. this pro-life vote is going to Brian Rooney.

This must be Tim Walberg's way of combating the steady stream of bad news for his campaign. First Eaton County GOP Chair Dr. Tarry switched his endorsement to Brian. Then Jackson County GOP Chair Kevin Brownlow endorsed Brian. Yesterday, Washtenaw County GOP Chair endorsed Brian. Tim must now realize that the race is not his and that he doesn't own this congressional seat. That must be why he's sending out his attack dogs now.

Oh and since when did you have to go to the Jackson Right to Life Dinner to be pro-life?

Here's another thing I posted at MLive in response to a post by Beth Thorrez.

Just looking through federal campaign finance reports and other information. It would appear that Tim Walberg supports the Republican Main Street Partnership through his acceptance of endorsements from both Dave Camp and Candice Miller.

    Candice Miller

    Dave Camp
    http://www.walbergforcongress.com/site/Viewer.a…

Evidence of the Republican Main Street Partnership's support to both Miller and Camp can be found here:

    Candice Miller For Congress $7,000
Dave Camp For Congress 2010 $5,000

Hmm… Does Tim Walberg support Republican Main Street Partnership candidates? Why didn't Tim Walberg renounce the endorsement of these two if hes so against the Partnership? I guess when it is a political advantage for Tim Walberg it doesn't matter. Well, if Walberg is truly against the Partnership then, he should renounce the endorsements from both Miller and Camp right away.

Also, if this attack is not from Tim Walberg, then why has Beth Thorrez's husband financed Walberg's campaign up to $2,400?
