Michigan not alone in seeking changes to sex offender registry

By Ed Brayton | 05.10.10 | 12:31 pm

The state of Michigan is not the only state struggling to comply with the changes required by the federal Adam Walsh Act to the state’s sex offender registry. The Bangor Daily News reports that Maine is having a difficult time with those requirements as well and may ask for a delay in implementation of those changes.

Legislators from that state call many of the changes required “unworkable” and “draconian” and say they have not yet found a way to comply with the law in a way that makes sense. One of the major problems there, as here, is how to treat juvenile offenders and those in so-called Romeo and Juliet relationships.

The Adam Walsh Act needs to be scrapped altogether. Not only has it led to even more confusion in the laws, but there is more to this train wreck than registry changes. It includes GPS, civil commitment, mandatory minimums, and extending jurisdiction to the US Marshals, who are now conducting invasive sweeps with no oversight. The law is not making us “safer.” In fact, it makes matters worse, plus it erodes the Constitutional fabric of our county.

As a retired police officer who worked with these laws and sex offenders, I have a lot of problems with the Adam Walsh Act and feel that it will cause more sexual assaults because of the way it was writen.

Ohio is the only state dumb enough to enact this law with a whirwhind of lawsuits and confusion in it's wake. People were changed from least dangerous to predators with the swipe of a pen and as you can imagine some of the cases are absolutely ridiculous.

Just put some crime victims name on a bill and you can get the most ridiculous laws passed.
