The punchline to the Riddle/Waters farce

By Ed Brayton | 05.07.10 | 7:03 am

As the state criminal trial for assault ends for Sam Riddle and the federal bribery and corruption trial is about to begin — a trial in which he is a co-defendant with the victim he was just convicted of pulling a shotgun on in the assault trial — the whole sordid relationship between Riddle and Waters may have reached the zenith of its own weird, self-referential surreality.

In a Detroit Free Press report, Waters laments the conviction of Riddle for pulling a shotgun on her:

Police and prosecutors set their sights on Sam Riddle, and now they have him, a morose Mary Waters said Wednesday after a jury convicted him of assaulting her.

“They were out to get Sam,” Waters said. “Sam is their trophy, and it’s just not right.”

This is the woman who A) called 911 on Riddle after he did it and B) testified just a few days ago that he and the woman he was in bed with were lying when they said they weren’t in bed together and that he didn’t brandish a gun at her. This is starting to sound like a Monty Python sketch.
