By Eartha Jane Melzer | 05.03.10 | 12:05 pm

Three weeks after announcing his bid to fill the congressional seat that is begin vacated by Bart Stupak, State Rep. Joel Sheltrown (D-West Branch), has ended his campaign to represent the 1st Congressional District, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Sheltrown, who is term-limited in the Michigan House of Representatives, announced today that he will not seek any state or federal office this year. He had previously considered a run for the 36th District Michigan State Senate seat.

Sheltrown says that he realized in order to run a successful race, he would have had to abandon his duties as a legislator to campaign full-time.

The remaining Democrats in the race are State Rep. Gary McDowell, who is from the Upper Peninsula town of Rudyard, and former Charlevoix County Commissioner Connie Saltonstall of Charlevoix.

The Republicans in the race are State Sen. Jason Allen, a lifelong Traverse City resident who just moved to Alanson, a small town in Emmett County in District 1; Tom Stillings of Antrim County’s Torch Lake Township; Dan Benishek of Iron River; Linda Goldthorpe of Helmer; and Don Hooper of Iron River.

Michigan’s 1st congressional district is one of the largest in the country. It includes roughly the northern third of the state’s Lower Peninsula and the entire Upper Peninsula.
