Michigan GOP asks legal counsel to step down

By Ed Brayton | 04.29.10 | 2:57 pm

In a very interesting development that might have an impact on the Republican gubernatorial campaign, the Michigan Republican State Committee has asked its chief legal counsel, Eric Doster, to step down pending the outcome of an investigation into an organization with ties to Attorney General Mike Cox that has taken out attack ads on some of the other Republican candidates for governor.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra asked Cox’s office to do an investigation into the matter and Rick Snyder asked Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land to investigate possible election law violations by the group Eagle Strategies, which lists Doster as their resident agent in the state.

Snyder and Hoekstra both allege that Eagle Strategies is working to help get Cox elected, which may explain why they’ve gotten little action out of the AG’s office on the matter. The group has taken out a radio ad attacking Hoekstra’s candidacy. They also have argued that another organization, the Michigan Civic Education Fund, is a front for Cox supporters as well.

At the very least, this means the Michigan GOP is taking the allegations from Snyder and Hoekstra seriously, or at least more seriously than Cox and Land have taken them so far. If there is an ongoing investigation by the party into the matter, the outcome of that investigation could well shake up the race for governor.
