Dueling Blackwater events in Holland

By Ed Brayton | 04.28.10 | 11:13 am

It’s Tulip Time in Holland, Michigan and Holland native Erik Prince, founder of controversial private military contractor Blackwater (now known as Xe) will be speaking on May 5 at a luncheon held during the festival.

A press release for the event indicated that Prince would be offering “an engaging and motivational presentation sharing insights into his life experiences and how the value-based lessons of his childhood in Holland helped launch his life’s journey.”

But it looks like Prince will have a competing event to deal with as well. Interfaith Congregation has invited Jeremy Scahill, author of “Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army,” to speak in the same city on the same day, offering the other side of the issue.

In a press release for that speech, Scahill says:

“The Tulip Time festival says Mr. Prince will discuss the ‘value-based’ lessons of his childhood in Holland. I believe it is important for people in Holland to hear about the actual values Prince and his company have employed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan where Blackwater operatives have killed innocent civilians and stolen childhoods.”

The Prince luncheon is sold out. Scahill’s talk is free and open to the public and will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Holland 7 Theater, 500 Waverly Road in Holland.
