Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is expected to issue new guidance Friday in relation to campaign finance reporting rules.
The move, reports the Grand Rapids Press, is in response to the Supreme Court ruling which found corporations had First Amendment rights. That ruling struck down limits on corporate donations and spending in campaigns.
And Michigan, which has already had a problem with so-called issue advertising which does not identify the person or group sponsoring the ad, is expecting an influx of such ads this campaign season.
“This could be the most important political reform easily in a decade and maybe a generation,” said Rich Robinson, executive director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network. “This is not an issue of Republican against Democrat but interest groups against citizens and their need for accountability and transparency in campaign spending.
Land is the running mate for Republican candidate Mike Bouchard. And as Michigan Messenger reported, Bouchard’s campaign hired media consultant Scott Howell and Company, which is known for its controversial advertising campaigns.
Land’s determination will be in response to a request by the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and is expected to be posted on the Secretary of State website Friday.
