Conyers: Tea Party participants ‘angry,’ judgement ‘compromised’

By Todd A. Heywood | 04.20.10 | 10:16 am

U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit) is taking heat for comments he made in an interview with the Two Guys Named Joe podcast.

The podcast, which features Democratic political consultant Joe DiSano and Republican political consultant Joe Munem, is an exploration of all things Michigan politics. The two consultants were at the Democratic Party’s nominating convention over the weekend and corralled Conyers for an interview.

During that interview, Conyers repeatedly referred to Tea Party members as “tea baggers,” a sexual slang term which the movement has rejected as a label.

“We are here now to understand the frustration of the tea baggers and the people who are angry,” said Conyers. “Many times when you’re angry, your rational abilities are compromised.”

As a result the blogosphere is on fire, with Fox Nation, Breitbart and others reporting on the Congressman’s comments.
