Hoogendyk formally announces challenge to Upton

By Todd A. Heywood | 04.15.10 | 10:51 am

Jack Hoogendyk, a former state lawmaker from Kalamazoo, announced via e-mail Thursday that he will challenge Congressman Fred Upton (R-St. Joesph) in August’s Republican primary.

Hoogendyk sent a letter to supporters in March seeking their advice on whether he should consider running against Upton, who has served in Congress for 22 years. In that letter, Hoogendyk slammed Upton.

As a case in point, the Congressman from the 6th Congressional district, Fred Upton has begun to demonstrate that he has lost touch with the wishes of his constituents who are demanding fiscal responsibility. They want the uncontrolled spending to stop. Yet, this Congressman:
-Voted for the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, (TARP)
-Was one of only 16 Republicans in Congress to vote for the Omnibus spending bill which adds over $300 billion to the deficit and funds numerous wasteful and unneeded programs
-Voted for the massive growth of No Child Left Behind – a federally funded public education program that has grown to over $100 billion
-Voted for the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, (S-CHIP) to adults and families with incomes over $66,000 per year AND voted to override President Bush’s veto.

Hoogendyk challenged U.S. Senator Carl Levin (D-Detroit) in 2008. He was soundly defeated in that race. But that has not stopped Hoogendyk from continuing his conservative activism. He is actively engaged in running monthly off the record meetings for conservatives to discuss issues, and he spoke in February to a rally of Tea Party and limited government supporters protesting Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s State of the State speech.
