A new study sponsored by environmental groups concludes that a new coal plant proposed by Consumers Energy to be built at the company’s Karn Weadock complex will increase the cost of electricity for consumers. The Jackson Citizen-Patriot reports:
The report, released last week, was prepared by TR Rose Associates for the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club. Those same two groups filed a lawsuit last month against the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment which issued the utility an air permit for the plant.
The Jackson-based utility wants to construct an 830-megawatt coal plant, and hopes to have it up and running by 2017. Consumers has estimated the cost to be at more than $2 billion.
The groups contend the new plant will cost $3.5 billion — a number they culled from a filing Consumers made with the Michigan Public Service Commission in January.
The study says this will raise the cost of power for customers by an average of $33 per year. Consumers Energy says the report is based on hypothetical data.
