Benson, McManus seen as top candidates in Sec. of State race

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 04.08.10 | 1:39 pm

Wayne State University law professor Jocelyn Benson has a clear lead in the race for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State, according to a recent poll of the Capital Caucus, a bipartisan group of Michigan political insiders. On the Republican side the candidate choice is less clear. The group gives State Sen. Michelle McManus of Lake Leelanau a six point lead over competitor State Sen. Cameron Brown of Sturgis.

“The insiders see two state legislators leading the pack; with Senator Michelle McManus at the top of the heap. Anne Norlander has yet to prove that she can translate her long time party activism into votes at convention or among the political elite. Ruth Johnson, should she enter the race, would presumably start with a strong base of support in Southeast Michigan, something which none of the other serious contenders can lay claim to. If McManus or Brown were to capture the nomination either would be the first sitting legislator nominated by the GOP for the post in decades”

Here’s how the Capital Caucus estimates the candidates chances of winning their party’s nomination.
