The Republican National Committee struck a deal with the Michigan Republican Party to sidestep federal funding limits, the Daily Caller reported on Wednesday .
Under the deal, MI-GOP would raise money — nearly $500,000 — for the RNC, and in turn the RNC would hand that money back to Michigan’s party.
“It was a known secret that a deal had been struck on the topic,” a former RNC official confirmed to The Daily Caller.
“I think the benefit to them was them getting guaranteed money,” the source said of the Michigan GOP, “and the benefit to the RNC was getting higher fundraising numbers.”
Campaign fundraising records show that on Dec. 31, 2009, five Michigan donors gave the RNC $496,000. In January and February the RNC distributed $500,000 back to Michigan, the report in The Daily Caller says.
MI-GOP spokeswoman Jennifer Hoff denied there was any wrongdoing or deal.
