After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

McCain robo-calls hit southeast Michigan

By Diane Sweet | 09.03.08 | 2:15 pm

I don’t know how the McCain camp got my phone number, let alone my mailing address, but nevertheless I received my first “robo-call” from John McCain last night:

“Hi, this is John McCain, and I’m calling independent-minded voters like yourself who are frustrated with all the partisanship and backroom deals in Washington.

Our convention begins tomorrow, and I think you will like what you see. In fact, I’ll have my campaign send you an absentee ballot application which will arrive by mail in the next few days, and I hope you use it to ensure your vote is submitted and counted.

Again, I hope you will watch our convention, and I would be honored to have your support with the absentee ballot application you should receive soon.

Thank you very much.”

Then another robo-person’s voice says:

“This call is paid for by John McCain 2008, 703-418-2008, 21235 South Park Street, Suite M, Arlington, Va. 22202.”

I called and spoke with Mary Helmbrecht, the clerk for Meridian Charter Township, to ask about the robo-call’s promised absentee ballot application. She tells me that she wasn’t aware that any campaigns had been making robo-calls in Michigan, but that sending absentee ballot applications “is absolutely acceptable.”

She further explained that Michigan law now requires a photo ID when you go to the polls to vote. However, voting by absentee ballot requires nothing more than your signature on the application, which is checked against your signature on your absentee ballot when you mail it in.

Thanks. I can't get the audio to work.

I run the National Political Do Not Contact Registry, any time you get a robo call I'd love to know about it and post on my website and blog.

As I testified at the US. Senate these calls are an epidemic and are invading the privacy of All American Voters.

Our members are taking a stand and saying enough is enough at the National Political Do Not Contact Registry at StopPoliticalCalls.org.

Here is a quote from a member recently:

“I'm a shift worker, working variable shifts. I depend on my sleep to be able to do my job safely and efficiently. I'm a locomotive engineer. Imagine the disaster were I to fall asleep, operating a freight train carrying hazardous materials in your neighborhood, due to fatigue from being awoken in my middle of the night on a continuous basis during election season. Please stop..”

This is something you need to think about if you are planning to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. Do you think McCain cares about the average American? – Think again! In 26 years John McCain voted against increasing the minimum wage 18 times.
In the same 26 years he voted for tax breaks for the wealthiest 2% of America 27 times. Why should that matter to you? McCain believes in a trickle down economy. You know if the wealthy get wealthier they will share with you. Obama believes in a trickle up economy, higher salaries for workingmen and women. When they earn more money they are able buy or keep homes, resulting in more employment in building trades. They buy clothes for their children, resulting in more Wal-Mart and GAP jobs. They will purchase new trucks and cars that will keep auto workers employed. Now what is better for this nation a trickle down economy or a trickle up economy? This republican is voting for Obama because we have tried a trickle down economy for eight years and look where this nation is now! Could it get any worse with Obama/Biden?
