Lansing Mayor and Democratic candidate for governor Virg Bernero lambasted gubernatorial opponent Andy Dillon Thursday for failing to support health care reform.
Dillon is a Redford Township Democrat and Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives. In an interview with the Michigan Information and Research Service (MIRS), a capitol subscription only newsletter, asked if he supported national reforms signed into law last week he was quoted as saying he was “undecided.”
In a press release and press conference in front of the Capitol Thursday, Bernero laid into Dillon, telling Dillon’s supporters “the joke is on them.”
“At a time when our state is in a full-blown fiscal crisis, why would any real Democrat stand with Mike Cox and the right wing extremists who are trying to scuttle health care reform?” Bernero asked. “Obviously Speaker Dillon is not standing with the people of Michigan who can’t afford health insurance and who are just one hospital visit away from bankruptcy. He needs to get on board or get out of the way.”
Dillon, for his part, wasted no time in responding to Bernero’s attack, posting the following to his Facebook page:
Andy Dillon is the target today of a ridiculous attack today by his opponent over health care reform. I’ve supported this landmark health care reform legislation, but believe the people of Michigan are desperately wanting a thoughtful approach to making sure this law gets implemented to the benefit of millions of Michiganders, rather than hollow rhetoric.
Dillon and Bernero are battling, along with Salem Township State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, to get the Democratic nomination for governor in August.
