The Associated Press is reporting that eight members of the Hutaree Militia, based in Adrian, were arrested by federal agents this weekend because they planned to kill police officers. A ninth suspect is still at large.

According to documents unsealed this morning, the militia members planned to kill police officers. Once those officers were being laid to rest, the militia planned to attack the funerals, setting off pipe bombs and other explosives, the AP reports.

The group hoped that the plan would lead to a wider war against the U.S. government, the FBI alleged in a press statement.

The indictments were levied against David Brian Stone, 45; his wife Tina Stone, 44; their son Joshua Matthew Stone, 21; their other son David Brian Stone, Jr., 19; Joshua Clough, 28; Michael Meeks, 40; Thomas Piatek, 46; Kristopher Sickles, 27; and Jacob Ward, 33. The FBI reported Joshua Stone remained at large.

The arrests came in raids in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana over the weekend. Seven of those people arrested had hearings in federal court scheduled at 10 a.m. The FBI said the group was planning a mission in April. The nine have been charged with charges of seditious conspiracy, attempted use of weapons of mass destruction, teaching the use of explosive materials, and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence.

The charge of seditious conspiracy carries a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, Attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction carries a statutory maximum penalty of life in prison, teaching the use of explosives materials carries a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence carries a mandatory minimum penalty of at least 5 years in prison.
