Oh SNAP! Palin hastily vetted, chosen last Thursday

Dan Balz of The Washington Post writes that McCain talked with Palin by phone the Sunday before last, did not actually meet her in person until Wednesday morning last week, and chose her only this past Thursday.

Based on Balz’s reporting, the decision time line looks like this:

Sunday, Aug. 24th

John McCain interviews Gov. Sarah Palin by telephone; she has allegedly been on a short list of 20 vice presidential candidates since the McCain campaign began its search for a veep.

Monday, Aug. 25th

Democratic National Convention (DNC) begins.

Tuesday, Aug. 26th

Hillary Clinton speaks at DNC, endorsing Barack Obama.

Wednesday, Aug. 27th

Palin undergoes a “… lengthy in-person background interview with the head of Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential vetting team,” according to the WaPo, during which Palin discloses her daughter’s pregnancy. Former White House counsel Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., now working for the McCain campaign, involved in interviewing Palin. Senior McCain advisers Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter interview Palin later the same day.

Questionnaire answered by Palin reviewed by McCain campaign.

Barack Obama nominated by delegates at DNC after Hillary Clinton calls for nomination by acclaim during a floor vote that afternoon.

Bill Clinton and vice presidential candidate Joe Biden speak at DNC Wednesday night, both endorsing Barack Obama.

Thursday, Aug. 28th

Palin meets McCain in Sedona, Ariz.. face-to-face for the first time.

Culvahouse still working on last-minute information until an unspecified time on Thursday.

At approximately 12:00 pm MDT, crowds are lining up outside Invesco Field in Denver, stretching up to six miles long at one point by at least one report (CNN).

Barack Obama accepts nomination that night in a speech before approximately 85,000 attendees and a television audience of 38.1 million.

Unknown time: McCain calls Palin and says they are selecting her as vice presidential candidate.

Friday, Aug. 29th

At approximately 10:30 am EDT, MSNBC reports a jet plane originating in Anchorage, Alaska, arrived at 10:30 pm Thursday night in Dayton, Ohio.

At approximately 11:00 am EDT, MSNBC confirms Palin has been selected as VP candidate.

At approximately 12:00 pm EDT, McCain campaign event in Dayton features McCain and Palin as McCain publicly announces Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Wow. If only I could go through an interview and get hired for a job as the backup leader of the free world with that little interviewing and that quickly … but then I’m sure there’d be a massive hue and cry about the hastiness and inadequacy of vetting for such an important job, yes?
