In a move that has been coming for several months, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now — ACORN — is disbanding and will no longer exist. The decision comes after two years of controversy and consequently falling revenues, the Detroit News reports:
The once mighty community activist group ACORN announced Monday it is folding amid falling revenues — six months after video footage emerged showing some of its workers giving tax tips to conservative activists posing as a pimp and prostitute.
“It’s really declining revenue in the face of a series of attacks from partisan operatives and right-wing activists that have taken away our ability to raise the resources we need,” ACORN spokesman Kevin Whelan said.
Some of the larger state affiliates, including California and New York, had already split away from the national group and restructured under a new name. In Michigan, all of the ACORN offices closed down last year.
The only question now is whether Republican candidates will continue to use a non-existent organization as their favorite boogey man on the campaign trail.
