A hat tip to Michigan State Rep. Jack Hoogendyk, R-Kalamazoo, who organized a blood drive at the Republican National Convention (RNC). Hoogendyk organized the Michigan delegation to the RNC in Minnesota to roll up their sleeves and donate blood to the Red Cross in anticipation of injuries from Hurricane Gustav and several other tropical storms brewing out in the Atlantic.
It was a great idea, Jack.
But maybe you should have listened to the Red Cross leadership, not lowly Bert Krinkle. The Petoskey News reports as follows on the blood drive:
“Blood has a shelf life, and if we have too much of it then it goes to waste,” said Jan McDaniel, the CEO of the Twin Cities Red Cross.
Instead, McDaniel urged those who wanted to help to make monetary donations to relief groups associated with the Red Cross.
Meanwhile, during the actual convention while Fred Thompson and others were busy blasting media members for everything under the sun, Hoogendyk and his wife (who interestingly enough is unnamed in the media reports) found themselves caught in a protest. Hoogendyk gave a television interview and suddenly realized he was surrounded by protesters. And ironically as all get out, he, his wife and four other RNC delegates were hustled to safety by a reporter from KARE 11 — the ABC affiliate in Minneapolis, about a half-hour before police launched a tear-gas cloud on protesters.
Evil media.
