Tax controversy forces Bernero campaign treasurer to step down

By Todd A. Heywood | 03.17.10 | 3:00 pm

Charles Moore, the treasurer for the gubernatorial campaign of Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, has stepped down.

In a press release from Bernero’s campaign, the campaign says Bernero asked Moore to step down. Moore agreed, sending a letter to the Democratic candidate. In the letter, Moore wrote:

“It has been a privilege to work with you in this capacity, but I believe it is best if I focus my time and energy on stabilizing my financial matters so my small business can grow and prosper in the years ahead.”

It was revealed by a report in the Lansing State Journal Wednesday that Moore owed $91,000 in back taxes to the Ingham County Treasurer’s office. Moore told the Journal he had made a $27,000 payment and only had $64,000 left to pay. As Messenger reported earlier Wednesday, Moore is not the first person with ties to Bernero who has had back tax issues.
