I am writing today to announce the closure of the Michigan Messenger. After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]
An abstinence-only presentation provided to numerous school districts in Calhoun and Eaton Counties in October of this year provided false and misleading information to students about HIV, experts allege.
Two county registers of deeds filed a class action lawsuit Monday on behalf of Michigan’s 83 counties alleging that the Mortgage Electronic Registration Services owes millions of dollars in property title transfer taxes.
Despite evidence of the impact of mercury on children and public health, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette last month joined with 24 other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit to scuttle new EPA regulations that would reduce mercury emissions from power plants.
Rep. Tim Walberg launches new attack ad against opponent and state senator Mark Schauer
The campaign for the 7th Congressional District, one of the most contested races in Michigan, is heating up. Republican Congressman Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, released a TV commercial on Labor Day attacking Democratic challenger Mark Schauer for his policy toward small businesses.
In the commercial, business owner Mike Shirkey, a donor to Walberg, claims Schauer will raise taxes. He also claims that taxes have hurt small businesses like his own.
Shirkey owns Orbitform, a Jackson county tool and die business.
Schauer’s campaign was quick to respond, calling the commercial “lies.” The Schauer camp put out a press release which reads in part:
“Mr. Shirkey, Mr. Walberg – tell the truth. Because of Mark Schauer’s hard work and dedication to his district, an MEDC report shows that Orbitform pays virtually no state or local taxes,” said B.J. Neidhardt, campaign manager for Schauer for Congress. “The simple truth is that Mark has fought on behalf of tool and die companies like Orbitform, which have been hit hard by the unfair trade deals that Tim Walberg and George Bush have staunchly supported.”
The campaign release goes on to state that Schauer fought to create the Renaissance Recovery Zone in which Shirkey put his business.
Shirkey also came under scrutiny from The Jackson Citizen Patriot recently when the newspaper reported the business owner had launched a two-minute monologue attacking Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. The audio was on the Orbitform phone system and has been uploaded to the Citizen Patriot here.
Here are a couple of quotes the CitPat pulled out for readers:
“It is the blatant socialism approaching communism attitudes and values of Barack Hussein Obama that scare the living daylights out of me.”
“If anyone even contemplates voting for this clown, the first thing they should do is have someone test the Kool-Aid they are drinking. Because someone has likely put some idiot juice in it.”
Shirkey also has his very own blog, in which he attacks all things Obama. Shirkey’s most recent post tells readers to watch a video which attacks multiculturalism.
