It didn’t take long for the ads taken out on the side of SMART buses in the Metro Detroit area by a coalition of atheist, skeptic and freethought groups to be vandalized. At least three of the ads, which say “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone,” had the upper left hand corners ripped off, removing the word “don’t” from the sign.
In a press release from the organizations that sponsored the ad, the leaders of some of those groups responded to the vandalism:
“Acts like this give a striking reminder that our message is necessary,” said Ruthe Milan, coordinator of Detroit CoR. “Without a doubt, prejudice against atheists and agnostics is still very real in American life.”
Jeff Seaver, Director of Center for Inquiry | Michigan added, “This incident underscores the vital need for organizations such as CFI and the Detroit CoR to provide a sense of community and a voice for nonreligious people throughout Michigan.”
SMART has replaced the vandalized signs at their own expense.
