The Board of Directors of the National Log Cabin Republicans (LCR), a gay rights group, voted 12-2 to endorse Arizona Sen. John McCain and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for President and Vice President of the United States.
“On the most important issue that LGBT Americans faced in the last decade-the federal marriage amendment-Sen. John McCain stood with us. Now we stand with him,” said Log Cabin Republicans President Patrick Sammon. “Sen. McCain is an inclusive Republican who is focusing the GOP on unifying core principles that appeal to independent voters.”
Isn’t that cute?
It’s also deeply misleading.
While McCain did vote against the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would define marriage as being only between a man and woman, he is a staunch supporter of similar constitutional amendments in states, including his own state of Arizona.
The release also says that there are issues with which LCR disagrees with McCain. I am wondering if those disagreements might not be things like McCain’s failure to promise a National AIDS Strategy, his unwillingness to support Federal Hate Crimes legislation and his refusal to make LGBT a protected class. What about his opposition to gays adopting and gays serving in the military?
