This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Catholic hospitals endorse health care reform bill

By Ed Brayton | 03.15.10 | 10:06 am

Here’s another odd twist to the dispute over abortion and the health care reform bill. Despite opposition from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Catholic Health Association — which represents more than 2,000 Catholic hospitals and medical providers in the United States — has officially endorsed the health care reform bill currently being taken up by the House. You can view their statement here (PDF).

The letter to legislators says:

On behalf of the Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA), the national leadership organization of more than 2,000 Catholic health care sponsors, systems, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and related organizations, I am writing to urge you to move quickly to enact health reform by passing the Senate-approved legislation in conjunction with a second “corrections” bill providing for necessary legislative fixes that will improve the overall package.

The CHA does advocate that several things about the Senate bill be changed after it is passed, including addition of language preventing any federal funding of abortion. But that, they say, should not stop the passage of the bill in the first place. It will be interesting to see if this has any effect on Catholic legislators like those Democrats aligned with Rep. Bart Stupak against the bill due to abortion issues.

It’s unlikely that this will change Stupak’s position; he’s far too committed to it publicly to be able to pull back now. But it could perhaps sway a few of the dozen or so legislators he has claimed to speak for over the last couple weeks. And with this vote likely to be extraordinarily close, every vote counts.

Not really that surprising. Somewhat, but I think this is calculated risk. They see a chance to shut down Abortion Funding and are going to take it. Stupak and his block are being seriously wooed by Obama. The Abortion Funding block (those that say the Government *has* to pay for it or it is not a FREE choice — nice catchy wording they are using, BTW) is solidly behind it since they KNOW the White House backs them and Obama might renege on the Democrats supporting it *only* if Federal Funding for Abortion is blocked. (Stupak's group) I think such a renege will kill it in reconciliation, and I think the CHA is gambling that such is the case and it will become clear to the White House to the point that they CAN'T renege, or reconciliation will not work! In such a scenario, Federal Funding of Abortion is blocked by a bill that the Democrats have unwisely put in language that says can't be eliminated or changed by future laws! That means it would require a constitutional amendment to finance Abortions with Federal Money, and I'd say that would be a *very* big win from their standpoint!

Shame on the Catholic Health Association! They are supporting an anti-Christian, anti-Catholic, anti-American Marxist SCAM that will destroy our health care, our economy, our freedoms and our country.

No amendment can transform a criminal scam like Obamacare into an honest bill. Any “amendments” will be just tricks, like the Stupak amendment, to force us to swallow the scam.

The Stupak amendment was just another trick used by Obama and his Comrades to pass the Obamacare SCAM through the House. Tricked by the amendment, some Catholics (not all) actually believed the lies of Obama and his accomplices regarding abortion coverage! Tricked by the amendment, they failed to look at the evil behind the whole Obamacare scam.

Informed Americans, however, understand that, if Obama gets his way, Obamacare will FORCE us to pay for abortions, infanticide (late-term abortion) and probably euthanasia, in spite of Obama’s lies and tricks like the Stupak amendment.

Lies do not change Obama's pro-abortion and pro-infanticide (late-term abortion) stand, nor the aberrant stands of Obama's Health Care Czar Ezekiel Emanuel and Science Czar John Holdren.

Lies do not change the FACT that we are broke and Obamacare will further destroy our economy, our future and the future of our children and grandchildren.

Lies do not change the FACT that Obamacare is another scam to enslave us.

We'll hold the Catholic Health Association responsible for supporting an evil SCAM that goes against REAL FREEDOM, TRUTH, COMPASION, and everything the Catholic Church stands for.

Antonio, you are entitled to your opinion, but your arguments are highly personal. You're right, the Catholic Church does stand for freedom, truth and compassion, I learned this while I was in Catholic drug rehab. It also supports family life, and opposes abortion, but the Obamacare is no scam, but a working solution.

You highlight very good issue.I hear news last night the chief executive of the Catholic Health Association, Carol Keehan, wrote on the group’s Web site that although the legislation isn’t perfect, it represents a “major first step” toward covering all Americans and would make “great improvements” for millions of people. The more than 600 Catholic hospitals across the country do not provide abortions as a matter of conscience.
