An attorney for the gubernatorial campaign of Republican Rick Snyder filed an amended complaint with the Secretary of State’s election division against a group called the Michigan Civic Education Fund, (MCEF). The original complaint was filed March 3 and dismissed Tuesday.
In a letter Tuesday from Melissa Malerman, administrative law examiner of the Legal and Regulatory Services Administration of the Secretary of State wrote:
“Regrettably, your complaint did not include copies of the radio, website, or billboard advertisements or evidence of their contents. Without this crucial evidence, the Department is unable to initiate an investigation at this time. The lack of subpoena power, audit authority, or other meaningful measure that compels a person to produce evidence for us in MCFA [Michigan Campaign Finance Act] investigation hinders our enforcement efforts.”
Dan Carlson, the attorney for Snyder who filed the original complaint, filed a second complaint almost immediately. This time he included information on an ad buy for a Grand Rapids radio station. Included in the complaint was the transcript of the ad, as well as the billing information.
A second complaint was filed March 3 against a group called Eagle Strategies. That group, the Snyder camp alleges, is tied to Attorney General Mike Cox and his bid for governor.
In an e-mail to Michigan Messenger, Snyder spokesman Jake Suski wrote:
“They have decided to pursue the Eagle Strategies complaint and I believe, are reaching out to Eric Doster (registered agent for Peace and Prosperity, aka Eagle Strategie,s as well as counsel for the MI GOP) for a response.”
Snyder is battling against Cox, Pete Hoekstra, a west Michigan Congressman; State Sen. Tom George; and Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard for the GOP nomination for governor.
