Is the UAW poised to endorse Bernero?

By Todd A. Heywood | 03.04.10 | 10:58 am

Following up on today’s report about the Democratic primary for governor, Tim Skubick is now reporting that Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero is likely to pick up the endorsement of the United Auto Workers.

From Skubick’s blog at The Oakland Press:

The buzz is all over town and of course it is not official until it is official but even the thought of landing such a plumb blessing is good news for Bernero who desperately needs this to jump start his fund raising efforts.

The union would do him a huge favor by trotting it out now and how ironic. At the time that Lt. Gov. John Cherry truly needed the UAW’s help late last year, the union stiffed him and as Paul Harvey once said, “You know the rest of that story.”

Any Democrat would give almost anything to have the financial and grass roots support that comes with a UAW tap on the head.

Dan Kildee, the former Genesee County treasurer, who said he has broad support and “a long and good record with organized labor,” conceded to Skubick that the UAW endorsement going to Bernero “does change things.”

That ties into what Democratic consultant Joe DiSano told Michigan Messenger. Specifically, he said labor endorsements would go to Bernero, and that would force Kildee to drop out of the race.

“Once labor endorses, then Kildee realizes that what he would believe to be his wheelhouse has gone to someone else,” DiSano said.
