Former State Rep. Jack Hoogendyk is considering a run for Congress and he sent out an e-mail to supporters Wednesday asking for input.
In the e-mail, he attacks Congressman Fred Upton, a Republican from St. Joseph, and the man Hoogendyk would challenge:
As a case in point, the Congressman from the 6th Congressional district, Fred Upton has begun to demonstrate that he has lost touch with the wishes of his constituents who are demanding fiscal responsibility. They want the uncontrolled spending to stop. Yet, this Congressman:
-Voted for the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, (TARP)
-Was one of only 16 Republicans in Congress to vote for the Omnibus spending bill which adds over $300 billion to the deficit and funds numerous wasteful and unneeded programs
-Voted for the massive growth of No Child Left Behind – a federally funded public education program that has grown to over $100 billion
-Voted for the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, (S-CHIP) to adults and families with incomes over $66,000 per year AND voted to override President Bush’s veto.
Hoogendyk then proceeds to highlight his bon fides as a fiscal conservative, noting that he was recognized as “one of the most fiscally conservative lawmakers.”
He notes his service in the legislature, but ignores his sound trouncing by U.S. Sen. Carl Levin (D-Detroit) in 2008.
