A plan to reopen Michigan’s only private prison as a detention facility for immigrants has been put on hold following a decision by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to cancel its request for new space for “criminal aliens.”
GEO Group, formerly known as Wackenhut, has expanded its shuttered 500 bed Baldwin facility in hopes of winning a federal contract for a 1,725 bed facility for criminal aliens. The company planned to open the new prison this year.
Cooley May of Macquarie Research Equities told Reuters that there has been a decline in demand for immigrant detention facilities.
“Based on our discussions… BOP has noticed a greater number of empty beds throughout the industry and has pulled the solicitation to reissue a request for proposal at a future date, in essence creating a broader bidding war.”
Though many residents near Baldwin supported redevelopment of the prison as a way to generate local jobs, some have raised concerns about the business practices and human rights standards at GEO Group facilities.
In 2008 the private prison corporation was charged with murder for allowing fatal beatings at a Texas facility.
